Unless you are using a hydroponic setup, a good soil mix is necessary to grow a strong luscious marijuana plant. Soil is there for the plants roots and a good soil mix gives the plant access to both air and water at the perfect amount. What you are looking for is a mix that holds water well and also has the ability to drain out any excess; if the excess water is not drained, your roots will not have access to air. Many garden stores have potting soil or a soilless mix which is great for marijuana. Many soilless mixes are made up of peat moss, vermiculite, and perlite all of which are not very expensive.
